happy 2 year anniversary!

my family moved from GA to WA two years ago. living in WA has been such a good experience for me, and a happy one. i am so happy that my childhood best friends moved up here a year after we did! so this week is my family's two year anniversary, and my friends one year anniversary! we meet every monday night, usually discussing film projects, etc. but this past monday, i got some party hats and we just visited and had a good time.

the truth about being a photographer

this post is a mix of my photography timeline, as well as a letter of encouragement to beginning photographers.

2011
you will start off with a nonprofessional camera.

you will be editing with picmonkey.com

you will probably only be using the cross process preset.

2010

you start shooting everything- from the cat to the siblings.

you will be reading every free resource available.

2009
2009
you have no idea what you're doing.

you get a better camera.
2012
it's hard.

it takes lots and lots and lots of practice.

you don't know what any of the buttons mean, and you're shooting in auto.

you will swing from one style/type often- in the beginning.
2012

you will be frustrated that your photos don't measure up to "so & so's."

you will put your camera aside and want to give up.

you might entertain some self pity, and stay there awhile.

2012
you will be excited about your photos, until you post them to the internet and see someone's else latest photography post.

you will blame your camera- and grieve that you don't have a several thousand dollar camera.

it will take a long time to get from one of your first photos- to your latest.
2013
2013

you will be criticized.

there will always be that one person who fails to see how being a photographer is an actual job- or how it is hard.

2012
2012
you will copy pictures from pinterest and your first shoot may include lots of typical senior/prom poses.

you will get your first positive comment(s)

you will see a glimmer of hope, and see that you may actually get the hang of this.

you will book your first shoot. the photos may not be amazing- but they are a big improvement.

2013
2013

you will start connecting and find other photographers who shoot the same style.

you start growing faster and faster.

you will get that expensive camera and editing equipment.
2014
2014

you start educating yourself beyond the free resources.

you start getting good.

2014
2014

you shoot your first wedding from finish to end.

you realize you don't want to do any other type of photography except people- mainly weddings.

2015
2015
you will do lots of free work, just to get your name out there.

you "shoot" your first model couple.

2015
2015

you "shoot" your first engaged couple- for money!

you get your first review.

2015
2015
you know you are starting to get good. and you get excited.

you may get criticized- again.

you will start booking more shoots- and actually get paid!

2015
2015

your photographic style will look foreign from the traditional style of photography- and will be questioned.

you might email other photographers - a few steps ahead of you - asking their advice about the pressure to change styles. they will tell you to stay true to you.
2015
2015
you keep on swimming.

you realize you are content with where you are- finally- but know you could definitely improve.

you keep on swimming.

keep on swimming.
